The E-2 visa is available to nationals of the US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and South Africa teaching English at authorized Korean educational institutions.

2. E-2 Visa Maintenance Conditions — What You Must Follow

① You may only work for your authorized employer

Your E-2 visa is tied to a specific employment relationship. If your employer changes, you must report the workplace change or obtain prior approval from the Immigration Office.

If you have a transfer consent letter from your previous employer, you have 15 days from your first day at the new workplace to file a change of workplace notification. If there is no transfer consent letter, or if you were dismissed due to your own fault, you must obtain prior approval from the Immigration Office before starting work at the new location. Starting work without going through this process may constitute unauthorized activity. 

② You may only engage in permitted activities

The E-2 visa authorizes English language instruction only. Private tutoring, online lessons, and additional classes at other institutions all fall outside the permitted scope and are grounds for cancellation. This applies to side jobs and part-time work of any kind as well.

③ Renew before your visa expires

You must apply to renew before your current stay period ends.  Allowing your visa to lapse puts you in undocumented (unlawful) stay status, which can result in fines, a departure order, and restrictions on future visa applications. Apply at least one to two months before your expiry date.

④ Your employment relationship must remain active

If your contract ends or your employer closes, the basis for your E-2 visa disappears. Taking no action means you will fall into undocumented stay status. Act immediately.
